A massive 91% of all email is spam, according to figures released in November by Postini, a company specializing in Integrated Message Management. Daniel Druker, Executive Vice President, Marketing, said the stat is grim confirmation that spam – unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic mail – is holding the internet “under a state of siege.

Now, more than ever, it is important to provide meaningful content to customers and prospects. One effective way to achieve this is through viral marketing techniques. For card issuers, the challenge is to provide interesting content that recipients want to share with their family, friends and other online acquaintances.

With direct mail response rates down to 0.2%, the future of card marketing is clearly online — and the best way to communicate your marketing message online is virally, that is, through customer advocacy. Don’t spam your target market, let your target market spread your message for you. Learn to market virally.
