The first weekend of March saw the new USA Today website go live. Most of the excitement – and there was a lot of it across the blogosphere – surrounded the numerous social networking, or 'community' features. Among other things, USA Today readers can now:

  • comment directly on stories, communicate with USA Today staff and participate in various discussion forums
  • write reviews and blog within their own personal USA Today 'space'
  • flag up stories they think other people should read and recommend them directly to friends, family and colleagues
  • contribute photos ('You’re not just a reader of news. You’re also a news observer and a news maker. So we’re going to be asking you to send us your photos.')
  • View stories from other websites and blogs
This is the latest example of a mainstream (media) company adopting social software and another reminder that Web 2.0 isn't here today, gone tomorrow — it's here to stay.
